The hostal is perched on a hillside, set back 150m from the road, within 30 hectares of its own primary and secondary cloudforest. The altitude of the property ranges from 1800m to 2700m with rivers and 3 big waterfalls to explore. Paths to the waterfalls meander through the jungle, up and across the river, and many guests come back exhilirated and covered in mud!
There are walks and trails locally to suit all abilities, whether you wish to go on a gentle stroll towards Antisana National Park, along the Cosanga river, or climb up steep sides of the waterfalls, hack your way through the jungle, and slide down muddy banks.
For the flora and fauna enthusiast, many types of orchids, fern, bromeliad, and funghi can be found along the way. Research biologists from all over the world have stayed here and been pleasantly surprised at how many new or rare species of plant or animal have been identified on the land. The birdlife is impressive, and other animals such as the Andean spectacled bear, Puma, Jaguarundi, Tigrillo, and Tayra inhabit the area. Nocturnal monkeys have recently been spotted next to the dormitory.
The Cosanga river at the bottom of the valley can be crossed on a wire using a harness (with a local guide), and the other side is predominantly primary forest full of wildlife, more waterfalls, and spectacular views. Along the banks of the Cosanga river itself are pools to bath in, sandy beaches and islands. We have fishing rods and inner tubes to borrow.
The Quijos valley was inhabited by the Cosanga culture (pre Inca), which gives forth to archeological interest for anyone wishing to explore. Locals talk of many yet undiscovered artefacts and sites in the area.
Bicycles are availabe for hire to visit neighbouring communities. Yanu Yacu biological research station is 16km from here, where important biological and ecological studies of the locality are conducted for books and museums all over the world.
